Barton H. Reutlinger, M.D.
Dr. Reutlinger is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon who has been in private practice with LBJS since 1980. He attended University of Louisville School of Medicine and received his M.D. in 1975. His surgical internship was completed at University of Virginia Hospital in 1976. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at University of Louisville/Louisville General Hospital in 1980. Dr. Reutlinger became board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1981. He is an active Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is a member of several orthopaedic and medical societies. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Louisville and is Past President of Jefferson County Medical Society and Foundation as well as Louisville Orthopaedic Society. He regularly participates in continuing education in his field.
Dr. Reutlinger enjoys woodworking and hunting. He is married and has two children, a grandson, and a granddaughter.
William M. Renda, M.D.
Dr. Renda is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon who has been in private practice with LBJS since 1985. He attended University of Louisville School of Medicine and received his M.D. in 1978. His surgical internship was completed at University of Louisville in 1979. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Louisville hospitals in 1983. He completed post-graduate training in rheumatoid and general orthopaedics at Princess Margaret Rose Orthopaedic Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland, and sports medicine training at Hughston Orthopaedic Clinic in Columbus, Georgia in 1984. Dr. Renda became board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1987, and recertified in 1994 and 2006. He is an active Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is a member of several orthopaedic and medical societies. He is on the Clinical Medical Staff of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Louisville. He is past president of Baptist Hospital East Medical Staff. Dr. Renda also performs FAA pilot exams and is very involved in the field of aviation. He regularly participates in continuing education in his field, specializing in sports medicine; knee, hip, and shoulder surgery.
Dr. Renda enjoys outdoor activities. He is married to a grandmother and has three children.
Joseph G. Werner, Jr., M.D.
Dr. Werner is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon who has been practicing with LBJS since 1995. He received his medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1988. He completed an orthopaedic surgery residency at University of Louisville in 1993 and a spine surgery fellowship at Tulane University in 1994. He became board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1996, and recertified in 2006. Dr. Werner is an active Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is a member of several medical, orthopaedic and spine societies.
Dr. Werner’s subspecialty interest is in the treatment of diseases and traumatic conditions of the spine. He regularly participates in continuing education in the fields of orthopaedic and spinal surgery.
David E. Borden, Jr., M.D.
Dr. Borden is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon who has been in private practice with LBJS since 1997. He attended University of Louisville School of Medicine and received his M.D. in 1991. His surgical internship was at the University of Louisville hospitals in 1992. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Louisville in 1996. Dr. Borden enjoys practicing general orthopaedic surgery and has a special interest in disorders of the foot and ankle. He completed fellowship training in foot and ankle surgery with Dr. James A. Amis at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Borden became board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1999. He is an active Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is a member of several medical and orthopaedic societies. He is a Clinical Instructor in Orthopaedic Surgery at University of Louisville. He regularly participates in continuing education in his field.
Dr. Borden is a woodworker and also enjoys sailing, mountain biking and other outdoor activities. He is married and likes hanging out at home with his wife and their Golden Retriever, Sammy.
Kittie H. George, M.D.
Dr. George is a Board Certified Orthopaedic surgeon joining LBJS in 2001. She attended University of Louisville School of Medicine and received her M.D. in 1995. Her surgical internship was completed at University of Louisville in 1996. She completed her orthopaedic surgery residency at University of Louisville in 2000 and subsequently completed a sports medicine fellowship with Kentucky Sports Medicine in 2001. Dr. George also has a degree in physical therapy. She has a special interest in shoulder and knee injuries. Dr. George was voted one of Louisville Magazine’s “Top Docs”, August 2007. She is a member of several medical and orthopaedic societies and regularly participates in continuing education in her field.
Dr. George is married and has three children.
Stephen P. Makk, M.D., MBA
Dr. Makk, certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, joined LBJS in 2003 after practicing in the Louisville area since 1995. He completed his medical degree, surgical internship, and residency training at the University of Louisville hospitals. His studies were completed in 1995. Dr. Makk has published several medical articles, regularly gives lectures, and has published a chapter in an orthopaedic textbook. In addition, he has a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. He serves as an advisor and developer for companies in the biotech and medical device industries. He is an active Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is a consultant to their Biomedical Engineering Committee. He is an Associate Clinical Instructor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Louisville. Dr. Makk has invented an arthroscope (fiber optic instrument for joint surgery). He is also Chairman of the Practice Management Committee, and serves on the Education Council of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and lectures nationally on this. Dr. Makk has been named to a congressional roundtable for the development of national electronic medical records standards.
Dr. Makk has special interest in minimally invasive joint replacement. He is trained in the use of a computer to perform hip and knee surgery. The use of navigation, or computer assistance, in knee and hip joint replacement applies new technology to improve patient outcomes. He also performs the Birmingham Hip® resurfacing procedure, a bone preserving alternative to hip replacement developed for younger, active patients.

Reid B. Brown, M.D.
Dr. Brown is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon, joining LBJS in 2004. He attended the University of Louisville School of Medicine and received his M.D. in 1998. His surgical internship and subsequent orthopaedic residency were completed at the University of Cincinnati in 2003. He completed a joint replacement fellowship at the University of Western Ontario in 2004. During his fellowship, Dr. Brown received special training in minimally invasive and computer assisted hip and knee replacements. In addition, his fellowship training focused on complicated hip and knee deformities, and revision joint replacements. He has been involved in numerous research projects related to joint replacement surgery. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and regularly participates in continuing education in the fields of orthopaedic and joint replacement surgery.
Dr. Brown has a special interest in total hip resurfacing, a bone preserving alternative to hip replacement. It was developed for younger, active patients wishing to return to normal activities without restrictions. He was the first surgeon in Louisville to perform the Birmingham Hip® resurfacing procedure, and was trained in both London, Ontario and Birmingham, England.
Dr. Brown also received specialized training in, and performs, the Deuce® minimally invasive partial knee replacement system. This procedure was developed for patients with knee arthritis isolated to just part of their knee, preserving the non-arthritic portion of the bone.
He is married and has two children.

Michael W. McQuillen, M.D.
Dr. McQuillen is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon who joined LBJS in August 2006. He received his medical degree from the University of Louisville, and completed his surgical internship, orthopaedic surgery residency, and fellowship training at the University of Tennessee-Campbell Clinic. After completing his residency, Dr McQuillen was a staff orthopaedic surgeon for the U.S. Navy from 2001-2005.
Dr. McQuillen practices general orthopaedics, but has a subspecialty interest in treatment of diseases and traumatic conditions of the foot and ankle. He became board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2003. He is an active Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and is a member of various orthopaedic and medical societies. Cheryl L. Ice-Burch, ARNP
Cheryl is a board certified nurse practitioner who joined LBJS in 2007. She works in collaboration with Dr. Stephen P. Makk treating patients in the office setting and as his assistant for surgical procedures. Prior to joining LBJS, Cheryl worked as a nurse practitioner in a hospital emergency department for eight years. She attended Bellarmine University and graduated in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Cheryl went on to graduate from Spalding University in 2000 with a master’s of science in nursing. She completed the Family Nurse Practitioner tract and became board certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners in 2000. She has obtained a post-masters degree and is working on completing her doctorate. Cheryl is adjunct faculty at Spalding University, and is a member of several nurse practitioner societies. She regularly participates in continuing education in her field.
Cheryl is married and has three children. She enjoys sports, traveling, cooking, and spending time with her family.

Mellisa is a board certified nurse practitioner who joined LBJS in 2008. She works in collaboration with Dr. Reid Brown treating patients in the office setting and as his assistant for surgical procedures. Prior to joining LBJS, Mellisa worked as a nurse practitioner with an internal medicine practice for over nine years, and with an endocrinology practice for two years. She attended University of Louisville where she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 1994 and Master of Science in Nursing degree in 1997. She completed the Adult Nurse Practitioner tract and became board certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) in 1997. Mellisa has been a preceptor for a number of nurse practitioner students over the last ten years and attends the annual Kentucky Coalition of Nurse Practitioner conference every year. She also regularly participates in continuing education in her field.
